How do we survive (and thrive) in the next four years?
I can’t believe it’s finally the end of January, no doubt the absolute longest month of the year. It was a month mixed with highs and lows. The weekend I spent with my two oldest friends was wonderful. As a family we’ve been spending afternoons and weekends at the mountain skiing and being with friends. It’s so special and fun. On the other hand, I don’t think I need to point out all of the absolutely horrific things the Trump administration has already done in the last two weeks (and how many people are seemingly ok with it). It’s not like I’m surprised, but every day is still a shock.
I’ve been thinking a lot about how we get through these next four years. When I write that now, it feels so heavy. I know I keep talking about the importance of connection, but I don’t think its significance can be understated. How many of us talk to our neighbors? How many of us know their names, have their phone numbers, would take out their trash, or ask for their help if need be? How many of us talk to people regularly, not on the phone or behind a screen, but in person? Even people we (gasp) don’t know.
Our connection, whether big or small, is what will sustain us through the many challenging days, weeks, months and years ahead. When you ask someone how they’re doing, are you ready for them to say “not good?” Are you open to replying with honesty too? Of course we need to feel safe in who we confide, but our shared vulnerability is a strength. We must be willing to provide a safe place to land for those who need it. And we need to accept that from others too. It’s our shared humanity that will not only help us survive, but thrive in the next four years. We can’t lose sight of that.
