Sunday Style 12.17.23
Some outfits I actually wore, and evaluating my need for something "new" with every life event.

The last few weeks have flown by and also felt like an entire lifetime. There’s been birthdays, funerals, holidays, celebrations, travel, and all of the life things that happen in between.
My typical mode of operation would be to purchase something new for such events. A knee jerk reaction to soothe my anxiety with the purchase of a new outfit. With the exception of the hiking boots I bought (which SAVED me for an 11 mile hike up a mountain) I went into my closet and found things to wear, and I’m happy to report, it was fine!
It was more than fine, it was lovely. I wore so many pieces that have been sitting untouched because they weren’t “new.” Like this gorgeous Sézane dress I got during pregnancy and wore numerous times the last few weeks.
Our “buy nothing” group here in Vermont is one of my favorite things. People can post what they no longer want or need for others in the community to have. Almost nothing goes unclaimed, and I’m talking everything from toddler clothes to couches to rocks (seriously).
There’s nothing like seeing someone use another person’s rocks to make you consider your own resourcefulness and consumption habits. I’m generalizing, but there’s such a commitment to reducing personal waste (and consumption) in Vermont. It’s influenced me in a big way. There’s also a practicality when it comes to fashion and style here. It’s cold, snowy, and muddy, there’s trails to be hiked, wood to be stacked…if you want to enjoy being outdoors, you have to dress sensibly.
The elephant in the room here is that my job and entire business model for the last 10 years has relied on mainly one thing: consumption. That has become increasingly difficult for me to reconcile, particularly as my lifestyle has changed quite drastically.
As I explore what my new path looks like and where it will lead, I’m leaning into the joy of re-discovering and loving what I already have. I hope it can help others do the same.
Some Outfits I Actually Wore
**A note about pieces marked “old.” These things aren’t really “old” they’re just not “new”, and probably not in stock. I’ve included brand names if you’re interested in searching for something secondhand.**
When I wore this outfit Marin said, “Mommy you look like Daddy in those pants.” I’m not sure if it was a compliment, lol. Wearing: Patagonia jacket (old), Sézane sweater (old), Talbots turtleneck (old), Sézane Pants, Blundstone Boots.
Faherty Sweater, AGolde Jeans (cut them myself), Blundstone Boots, Talbots Turtleneck (old)
Aritzia Sweater, AGolde Jeans, Smartwool Socks, Crocs (birthday present, I love them 😬)
Aritzia Sweater, Mate the Label Sweats, Dolce Vita boots (old)

As someone who is trying to buy less and use more of what I already have, these posts are SO appreciated. Thank you! I wish others would follow in your footsteps and do the same.
Your thoughtfulness about consumption is much appreciated. I’m generally trying to be in the same boat and it’s hard but necessary!! Loving these rugged meets Woodstock chic fall in VT outfits!!
